Established in 2008, the Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry offers a Doctor of Optometry (OD) program that focuses on optometric rehabilitation, including neuro-optometry. This emerging specialty helps patients with visual and perceptual problems due to brain injury, stroke, physical disability, or neurological illness. Its optometric rehabilitation also includes vision therapy, low vision rehabilitation, and care for those with developmental disabilities.

Low vision rehabilitation, for example, focuses on maximizing a patient’s remaining vision through the use of customized optical devices, adaptive technology, visual skills training, and strategies to modify daily activities. Neuro-optometric rehabilitation helps restore and enhance visual function following neurological events, such as strokes, traumatic brain injuries, or surgeries, improving a patient’s ability to perform everyday tasks and overall quality of life.
